Obituary for Edna Louise Markham (Kettler)

Edna Kettler Thompson Markham was born on February 23, 1927 and passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016. She was one of four children born to William and Emma K. Kettler, at their home in Coryell County, near Gatesville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her brother Henry and sisters Hennie and Ella. Edna was the last survivor of her family.
She grew up known as Baby Sister, living near St. John Lutheran Church. Her first memories were of her and her family getting ready to go to church every Sunday.
Edna enjoyed living in the country and was an outdoors type of person, happiest being around all types of small animals. She loved children. Her grandchildren were very special to her and she loved them dearly.
In 1945, Edna moved to San Angelo and then to Carlsbad, Texas. She started working at McKnight State Hospital, which later became a MHMR facility, now known as San Angelo State Supported Living Center.
Edna met her love in 1949 and married Troy A. Thompson on May 20, 1950. To this union two sons were born, Clifford Dale Thompson and Clinton Darryl Thompson. The family lost their devoted husband and loving father on March 4, 1973.
Life went on for each of us. In 1974, Edna married C.H. Markham and later they moved to Hico, TX to begin their ranching business. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Edna continued working on the ranch by herself; no job was too large for her. Those were happy days and she loved being with the animals and her family. At the age of 80, retirement came again. It was hard for her watching her small and large animals go off to auction; she and her two guard dogs stood alone. She found good homes for her faithful dogs.
Edna returned back to San Angelo in July of 2007 and made her home at Rio Concho Manor where she made many wonderful friends over the years.
She is survived by her son, Dale and his wife Sylvia of Dove Creek; son, Darryl and his wife Sandra of Austin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 12-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2016 and 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the Water Valley Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
