I began my funeral service career in Big Spring, Texas while attending Howard College becoming interested in funeral service. I then attended Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Upon graduation, I began work at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas for about five years before purchasing the Newby Funeral Homes in Bronte and Robert Lee in 1977. All these years my first goal was service to the families of the Concho Valley in a way that would benefit them no matter what type of service they desired. With that thought in mind a number of years ago I decided it was time to give back not only to the community’s I served but to the families of Texas and my profession. I became heavily involved with the Texas Funeral Directors Association, first serving on the Board of Directors for the West Texas Region. Then going forward and serving at the State level being elected by my colleagues to serve as State President in 2005. During this time I have served on numerous committees but what I have enjoyed most is serving on and several times chairing our State Legislative Committee. During the past 20 + years I helped co-author and pass the current State Law for cremation which now serves as a model for other states. I have been and continue to be very proud of our Association serving thru good times and bad and continue to look forward trying to better the profession to the benefit of the families we serve.
