Obituary for Maudie Virginia Conley (Watson)

Maudie Virginia (Watson) Conley, 85, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 10, 2016 after a short illness. Maudie was a Christian woman who never met a stranger, always ready to help family, friends, or anyone in need. Visitation will be held all day Monday, December 12, 2016 at Shaffer Funeral Home in Robert Lee with family present 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Robert Lee, Texas. Burial will follow the service at the Robert Lee Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.
Maudie was born on Feb. 20, 1931, to Thomas Wesley Watson and Myrtle Mae (Bessent) Watson in Robert Lee, Texas. She graduated from Robert Lee High School and San Angelo College that she attended on academic scholarship.
Maudie married John Quinn Conley on Sept. 16, 1951. They were happily married 52 years until John’s death in 2004.
Together they raised four children in the Perkins-Prothro Oil Camp in Coke County near Silver, Texas. When their kids were in high school, the family moved to Robert Lee in Coke County. While living there she worked for the district attorney in San Angelo.
In 1975, Maudie and John moved to Wichita Falls where John was production superintendent for the Perkins-Prothro Company. In Wichita Falls, Maudie worked for the Wichita County Sheriff’s Department and later for the Wichita County Tax Office. John and Maudie retired in 1992 and returned to Robert Lee to live the remainder of their lives. They were active members of the Robert Lee First United Methodist Church where Maudie sang in the choir.
Maudie was always a loving and proud mother of her four children and a proud and loving grandmother for their families including her nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. One of her joys in life was attending as many of her children’s - and later her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s - school and sports events.
One of the highlights of the Conley family were the summer gatherings on the Llano River when her children were growing up and, later, at Possum Kingdom Lake where more than 30 family members would gather for several days to enjoy her delicious food, play games, share stories, and give the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren the opportunity to grow up together and share life-long experiences, memories and lasting friendships. Everyone loved being with their “Mamaw!”
Maudie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Myrtle Mae Watson; her brother, Jimmy Watson; her husband, John Conley; and her daughter-in-law, Debbie Conley.
She is survived by her four children, Gayle and husband Bobby Bolding of Robert Lee, Quinn Conley and wife Brenda of Abilene, Jackie and husband Lee Grace of Wichita Falls, and Mike Conley and partner Luann Robinson of San Angelo; grandchildren, Daisy and husband Joe Blair of Abilene, Cara and husband Charlie Deanda of Spring Branch, Andrea and Kirby Freeman of Waco, Bree Sherwood and husband Adam Morgan of Robert Lee, Brady Bolding of Robert Lee, Jenny and husband Chris Bruner of Wichita Falls, Jonathan and Rachel Grace of Dallas, Sam Conley of San Angelo, and Stacie and husband Justin Dickey of San Angelo, and fifteen great grandchildren.
