José Gonzalez Alvarado, Jr., 67, went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, November 4, 2016. Visitation will be held all day Monday, November 7, 2016 at the funeral home with a rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow in Johnson's lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
José was born in Del Rio, Texas on December 12, 1948 to José and Esperanza Alvarado.
José G. Alvarado was a true son of this great country devoting his career and life to representing and defending those values that portrayed the best of humanity. He enlisted in the US Army when he was seventeen and served for twenty-nine years until his Honorable Discharge. He is the recipient of multiple commendations and a veteran of Vietnam, Bosnia and Desert Shield. In addition to being a career soldier he served as a Tom Green County jailer for eighteen years until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Evangelina “Vangie” of thirty-nine years of marriage; three children and their spouses, Vangie & Joe Kisa, Ana Lilia & Scott Kress and Humberto “Bet” & Sophia Martinez. José is survived by eight grandchildren, Ilyssa, Brianna & Diane Kisa, Seville & Nadia Kress, Adelina Garcia, Iliana & Joaquin Martinez; three great grandchildren, Isaiah & Elijah Duarte and Edward Garcia III; one sister and spouse, Evangelina & Steve Bailey; one brother Roberto Alvarado; several nieces and nephews.
