The funeral home in Bronte is the community’s oldest continuously operated business.
Ed Schaue owned a furniture store and the undertaking business in 1902. This is the same year that Bronte got its name and Post Office. Frank Keeney bought out Mr. Schaue in 1906, goods included dry goods, groceries and three varnished coffins. W.B. “Bruce” Clift, owner of the funeral home in Robert Lee, bought Mr. Keeney’s Funeral Business in Bronte in 1946, thus combining the funeral business of Bronte & Robert Lee under one ownership. Sam Williams worked 12 years for Mr. Clift before buying the business from him two weeks prior to his death in November of 1963. George Newby operated it for 10 years after buying the business from Sam Williams. George then sold the business to Gary Shaffer in August of 1977.
The Shaffer family has owned and operated Shaffer Funeral Home since August of 1977, for 35 years. In 1994, Shaffer Funeral Home was relocated to 509 South State Street.
